The Kerala High Court came down heavily on a person who filed a writ petition seeking a direction to the Beverages corporation to take a decision to make available potable liquor for delivery to consumers through online portals, LiveLaw reported.

In his plea, the petitioner named Jyothish said since the outlets are crowded during business hours, the outbreak of coronavirus has rendered it unsafe for him to visit an outlet to purchase alcohol, and therefore he has made suggestions on alternate modes of delivery to consumers.

Imposing a cost of Rs 50,000 on the petitioner, Justice AK Jayasankaran Nambiar said "One cannot help but lament at the selfishness of the petitioner in the instant case, and others like him in Society, whose obsession with perceived "rights" blinds them to the obligatory 'duty' that they owe to their fellow citizens.

Kerala has reported 25 positive cases for coronavirus till Thursday and over 30,000 are under surveillance.

The LDF government has announced a Rs 20,000 crore financial package to tide over the present crisis in the wake of the virus outbreak.
