Kolkata Knight Riders win by 86 runs

  • 11:15 PM

    Recap

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Eoin Morgan lost the toss but it didn't really matter at the end as they all but secured the final available playoff spot with a thrashing of Rajasthan Royals. First, Shubman Gill (56 off 44) and Venkatesh Iyer (38 off 35) gave the team a solid foundation to score a big score. Then, the bowlers defended 171/4 in some style, dismissing RR for 85 all in 16.1 overs. Shivam Mavi (4/21) and Lockie Ferguson (3/18) led the pack even as Shakib Al Hasan and Varun Chakaravarthy contributed with vital strikes.  For RR, Rahul Tewatia played a valiant knock of 44 off 36. There's no difference in the standings but KKR have further boosted the net run rate, to 0.587, and made Mumbai Indians' task almost impossible. RR will finish the season 7th, just above Sunrisers Hyderabad, with 10 points (five wins and nine defeats).

And best bowling figures for Shivam Mavi (4/21 in 3.1 overs) to wrap up the match. Rahul Tewatia (44 off 36) drags on and it's all over for Rajasthan Royals, and most probably Mumbai Indians. An 86-run win for Kolkata Knight Riders and they sure join Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the playoffs.

    Preview

Kolkata Knight Riders have their fortunes in their hand. Thursday's game against Rajasthan Royals will determine whether KKR makes the knockout or not. RR are effectively out of contention but can spoil KKR's party. Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians each have 12 points from 13 matches. KKR are fourth with a better run-rate and hence a win in Sharjah will brighten their chances of edging out MI, who need a big win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Abu Dhabi on Friday. It may all boil down to run-rate but KKR first need to win. Andre Russell and Lockie Ferguson, who missed the last few games, could be back versus Rajasthan Royals. Batting first or chasing, KKR will expect a good start from their openers where Venkatesh Iyer has been outstanding. Follow live cricket scores of KKR vs RR here.
